Moving Between Emirates: Planning the Drive, the Day and the First Night
Sharjah to Dubai or Dubai to Abu Dhabi? The drive is the easy part. Here is how to plan the timing, the access and your first night.
On a map, moving from Sharjah to Dubai or from Dubai to Abu Dhabi looks simple. Load the truck, drive down the highway, unload. In practice, the drive is the easy part. The real work lies in getting two buildings, two time windows and one truck to agree with each other, and in not being stranded without a kettle at midnight. Here is how to plan it.
Think of it as two moves connected by a road
Every inter-emirate move has a loading end and an unloading end, and each one has its own rules. Authorities, communities and buildings can all do things differently, so what worked in your old area may not apply in the new one. Treat each address as a separate job, then link them together.
- Contact building management or the community office at both addresses.
- Ask about move permits, service-lift bookings, loading areas and permitted moving hours.
- Ask what documents they need, and how far ahead.
- Check your tenancy contract and speak to your landlord about any handover steps.
Get the timing right
The hardest part of this kind of move is making two time slots line up. If your old building lets you load in the morning and your new one only allows unloading at certain hours, the truck can end up with nothing to do but wait. Share both windows with your mover early and build the plan around them.
Rush hour matters as well. The roads between Sharjah and Dubai, or into Abu Dhabi, can move at very different speeds depending on the time and day, so talk to your mover about when to leave rather than guessing from your commute. Leave some room in the plan. A schedule with no slack is usually one traffic jam away from trouble.
Decide what travels with you
The truck and your car will not always arrive together. Keep anything you cannot be without in your own vehicle, so a delay on the road is only an inconvenience.
- Passports, tenancy papers and other important documents.
- Medicine, jewellery and anything of sentimental value.
- Laptops, chargers and work items.
- Pets and plants, particularly in the summer heat.
The first-night box
A move to another emirate often means you cannot just pop back to the old place for what you forgot. Pack a first-night box, mark it clearly, and load it last so it comes off the truck first. Better still, put it in your car.
- Bedding and pillows for every bed.
- Towels, soap, toilet paper and toiletries.
- Kettle, mugs, tea or coffee, and bottled water.
- Snacks and simple food, plus plates and cutlery.
- Phone chargers, a small toolkit, scissors and a torch.
- Clean clothes and school or work things for the next morning.
Sort out life at the new address
Check the practical side of your new area a week or two ahead. Arrange your electricity, water and internet with the right providers for that emirate, since they may be different from the ones you use now. Look up the nearest supermarket and pharmacy. If the school run or the commute is changing, try it once before moving day so the first Monday is no surprise.
Leave the day with a clear finish
Unload the beds and big furniture first, and get them placed before the boxes close in around them. Check every room against your list before the crew leaves, and make sure anything dismantled has been reassembled as agreed. Then stop. The boxes will still be there tomorrow.
Moving across emirates is a good job to share. Al Mizan Movers runs door-to-door moves across all seven emirates, including packing, wrapping and furniture reassembly, with the scope set out in a clear written quote. Then all you have to carry is the first-night box.
